Pancreatitis is not only hard on your pancreas but also can cause your liver to go into distress. Beets are high in folate and B vitamins which are good for making new blood cells. The new blood cells are in high demand if your body is damaging them in your pancreas and liver.
Another benefit of beet juice is the fact that it has been found to increase the body's production of glutathione. This glorious substance is naturally produced by the human body and is known as the master antioxidant and detoxifier. Basically every cell of the human body uses it to neutralize toxins. You cannot take glutathione as a supplement (they do sell them, but due to bio-absorption they DO NOT work), so increasing your body's natural production is the key!
Warning: It turns your urine and feces bright red when consumed in large amounts, I went to the doctor for this and it was incredibly embarrassing!
Pancreatitis is one of the most painful acute and chronic illnesses I have ever experienced. If you have acute pancreatitis you will not find this recipe very helpful because you will likely be on an NPO diet (no food or water) until your pancreas settles down. This can go on for days, weeks, or months depending on your cranky panky. I was unable to eat for about 10 days and they decided to place an NG feeding tube to keep me nourished.
If you are experiencing chronic pancreatitis then this will hopefully help you out!
There are 3 guidelines for making your pancreas happier
1. Low sugar
2. Low fat
3. Papaya enzymes
The first food they give you in the hospital is a clear liquids tray. Usually consisting of broth, soda, juice, and Jello. Three of the four are pure sugar. Eating sugar causes your pancreas to work on double time, exactly the opposite of what we want it to do. We want our pancreas' to be resting and working as little as possible. So do me a favor, drink the broth and water but avoid the sugar snacks!
Low fat is hard to do, especially if you love peanut butter like I do! The recipe above is a great outline for meals to have with chronic pancreatitis. A LEAN MEAT + VEGETABLES=HAPPY PANCREAS
Papaya enzymes helped alleviate more pancreas pain than any of the pharmaceutical medications they prescribed to me. I bought papaya gel from Vitamin Cottage, it comes in little packets like ketchup that you can squeeze into your mouth. These are a MUST have if you have pancreatitis.
