Pancreatitis is one of the most painful acute and chronic illnesses I have ever experienced. If you have acute pancreatitis you will not find this recipe very helpful because you will likely be on an NPO diet (no food or water) until your pancreas settles down. This can go on for days, weeks, or months depending on your cranky panky. I was unable to eat for about 10 days and they decided to place an NG feeding tube to keep me nourished.
If you are experiencing chronic pancreatitis then this will hopefully help you out!
There are 3 guidelines for making your pancreas happier
1. Low sugar
2. Low fat
3. Papaya enzymes
The first food they give you in the hospital is a clear liquids tray. Usually consisting of broth, soda, juice, and Jello. Three of the four are pure sugar. Eating sugar causes your pancreas to work on double time, exactly the opposite of what we want it to do. We want our pancreas' to be resting and working as little as possible. So do me a favor, drink the broth and water but avoid the sugar snacks!
Low fat is hard to do, especially if you love peanut butter like I do! The recipe above is a great outline for meals to have with chronic pancreatitis. A LEAN MEAT + VEGETABLES=HAPPY PANCREAS
Papaya enzymes helped alleviate more pancreas pain than any of the pharmaceutical medications they prescribed to me. I bought papaya gel from Vitamin Cottage, it comes in little packets like ketchup that you can squeeze into your mouth. These are a MUST have if you have pancreatitis.
